Tates Creek Elementary’s inaugural Fifth Grade Leadership Conference featured five sessions focused on CREEK principles: Connected, Responsible, Engaged, Empathetic, and Kind. Leaders from the district office coordinated the sessions, and students rotated among locations on their campus and at the adjacent high school and the city’s Tates Creek Community Center.
“Student Support was excited to lead an activity related to empathy with the fifth graders. They were already very knowledgeable about the topic and really talked with each other about ways they can ensure they are building community and empathy throughout this school year together,” said Dedeeh Newbern, head of Student Support for Fayette County Public Schools.
The other group facilitators came from the offices of School Leadership, Human Resources, and Legal Services – providing great role models for the budding leaders at TCE. The day-long conference wrapped up with a family dinner and encouraging message from our Department of Family & Community Engagement.
TCE Principal Carrie Paul had kicked off the day with a keynote in the high school’s auditorium. She emphasized that effective leaders offer consistent, daily acts of service in support of something the group strongly believes in, such as CREEK. Paul also reminded students that the teachers and staff will provide support and praise along the way.
